When Rebecca came to Narberth
In 1839, anger over road tolls erupted across West Wales. Farmers were especially frustrated by the cost of transporting lime for their fields.
At night, groups of men disguised as women attacked toll gates. These men called themselves “Rebecca and her daughters.”
Narberth was caught up in the unrest. Several local toll gates here were destroyed.
The pub at the top of St James Street, originally called The Gate, marks the site of the East Gate.
Imagine the scene: darkness, shouting ….and another gate about to fall to Rebecca!
