Remembering Narberth’s fallen
Narberth made a remarkable contribution during the First World War, with proportionately more men volunteering than in many towns of a similar size.The War Memorial records the names of 35 local men who died in the conflict. It was unveiled by Private Albert Nicholas, himself badly wounded during the war. A further 11 names were added following the Second World War.
Nearby, the Lamp Standard has its own story to tell. It became Narberth’s first electric streetlight in 1901, switched on to celebrate the Relief of Mafeking during the Boer War.
Together, these memorials reflect both the sacrifice and the changing times experienced by Narberth at the start of the 20th century.
